Non Regulatory

Viscaria today announces that Staffan Sandström has been appointed as Senior Adviser to support the company in the next phase towards reopening the Viscaria copper mine in Kiruna. The assignment has a clear focus on operational readiness and on ensuring a robust and efficient start of the mining operations.

With extensive experience from the Nordic mining industry, Staffan Sandström brings deep expertise in mining operations, technology, strategy, leadership and the establishment of stable and safe operations. In his role as Senior Adviser, he will contribute with practical experience from operations, strategic development and production management, with a particular focus on operational readiness and long-term operational reliability.

“As Viscaria transitions from development into operations, it is critical to establish the right structures, strategies, ways of working and decision-making processes to ensure a controlled start-up. Staffan’s extensive operational experience from more than 30 years at Boliden, combined with his time with Lundin mining as CEO of Zinkgruvan Mining, is highly valuable and strengthens our ability to achieve a high level of operational maturity ahead of the production start,” said Charlotte Odenberger, Chief Operating Officer at Viscaria.

Staffan Sandström is a highly experienced leader within the metals and mining industry. He has spent most of his career with Boliden, where he held several senior positions with responsibility for mining operations, technology and business development. Between 2019 and 2025, he served as CEO of Zinkgruvan Mining, leading the operation through a period of technical development, increased focus on safety, operational stability and increased production.

Staffan Sandström is a Mining Engineering from Luleå University of Technology and has also been active in international industry organisations, including service as a member of the Executive Committee of Euromines.

“It is an ambitious work that has been carried out by Viscaria’s organisation over recent years. My impression of the project is positive, and I look forward to contributing with my experience to the continued work ahead. Viscaria has strong potential to become a long-term, stable and responsible producer of copper,” said Staffan Sandström.
