Information about Ädnamvaara-trail

We understand the frustration many Kiruna residents and visitors feel regarding the current accessibility of the Ädnamvaara cabin. Nature and outdoor life are an important part of everyday life in Kiruna, and it is therefore equally important to us that the trail maintains a high and long‑term sustainable standard. Many of our employees use the area in their own free time, and we naturally share the commitment to finding a good solution.

The previous trail crossed open mires and lakes and was therefore naturally smooth. The temporary route in place today runs through forested areas with uneven ground and requires extensive groundwork. We are aware that it does not meet the desired standard, particularly given the current snow conditions. Work on a permanent solution has begun, but the trail is still under construction and could not be completed in time because the County Administrative Board’s land concession to the municipality, which manages the trails, has been delayed.

To create a permanent and long‑term solution, we have developed proposals for a snowmobile trail, ski track and summer trail. These have been prepared together with the relevant parties, and representatives from, among others, STF, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, Friluftsfrämjandet and Fjällcyklisterna have reviewed the proposed routes. The municipality has applied to the County Administrative Board for permission to use the land for the trails, but the process has been prolonged because Gabna Sami village has objected to the concession. The municipality has therefore not yet been granted the right to use the land for the proposed routes.

While awaiting a decision, we have established a temporary trail within our own area, close to the fence. We consider it important that at least a temporary route is available, as this reduces the risk of off‑trail riding in areas that are sensitive, not least for reindeer herding. At the same time, we are fully aware that the temporary trail does not meet the quality we aim to achieve.

Viscaria is responsible for the section from the railway bridge crossing the E10 up towards the foot of Ädnamvaara. The remaining stretch towards the cabin falls under the municipality’s responsibility. We are ready to complete our section as soon as the municipality gains access to the land.

Our ambition is clear: to create sustainable, high‑quality trails that allow Kiruna residents and visitors to continue reaching the Ädnamvaara cabin safely and reliably. We are actively working to move the process forward and look forward to implementing the permanent solution as soon as possible.
