Precision and stability in focus during raise boring

Orefields Raise Boring is currently undertaking pilot drilling for pump holes at the Viscaria project site, a task requiring high technical precision and strict adherence to safety and sustainability standards. The pump holes are a crucial part of the mining infrastructure and essential for future operations.

Advanced Drilling Techniques for Optimal Results

To create the pump holes, a method called pilot drilling is employed. The process begins by defining the start and end points using detailed coordinates. Stabilisation rods are used to maintain the alignment of the drill hole, and, if necessary, measurements of the pilot hole are taken during drilling using specialised tools. This method ensures that the holes are straight, which is vital for their functionality and longevity.

Once drilling is complete, the pump holes undergo filming and mapping. These procedures provide a visual understanding of the geology and breakthrough, offering critical data to verify and document the results.

Project Status and Timeline

The drilling of the first pump hole is now complete, and the rig has been relocated to commence drilling the second hole. Work on Pump Hole 2 has reached a depth of 60 meters out of the planned 315 meters. The project is progressing on schedule and is expected to be completed by March or April 2025.

The work is carried out by Orefields’ team of four operators, working in two shifts. During a single shift, one operator manages the rig from 5:00 am to 3:00 pm, and the second operator takes over from 2:00 pm until midnight. For specific tasks, such as setting up or moving the rig, the entire team collaborates to ensure smooth and efficient execution. Additional personnel are brought in during these critical phases if required.

Collaboration Driving the Project Forward

Collaboration with Orefields is a key aspect of Viscaria’s development. By utilising modern drilling practices along with a coordinated strategy, their efforts are vital for achieving sustainability in mining operations.
The raise boring project remains a significant component of ongoing work at the Viscaria project site.
